Glorifying God through skills

00
Weekly Bible Study #31

This week we are going to talk about something that everyone has, whether you realize it or not. That thing is skills; we all have skills or abilities whether we learn it as part of our job, or on our own by a hobby. We should all strive to allow our skills and abilities to glorify God in some way.
So lets start things off with one of my favorite scriptures.

1 Corinthians 10:31
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God

This is a verse I have always lived by. I believe you can find a way to glorify God through about anything if you get creative with it. A lot of people think that in order to make a difference in the Kingdom of God that they have to take to the pulpit and preach as a pastor. You can make a difference in the Kingdom of God by simply helping people or even other ministries with tasks they may not possess the skillset for.

1 Corinthians 6:20
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

For the two years I attended Bible College I had it in my mind that I wanted to be a youth pastor. After completing my courses I stayed in the workforce for awhile and eventually asked myself “What can I do to glorify God? What can I bring to the table?” What I had was a large collection of Christian metal, so that’s when Metal Blessing Radio was born in July of 2008. At the time I didn’t have many skills but I had a passion and a willingness to manifest that passion.

Romans 6:13
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

We are to be instruments of righteousness; an instrument is basically a tool so with that in mind we should strive to be tools to bring forth righteousness. Some of you may be thinking “well that’s great but I don’t have any skills.” I know better than that, everyone has some kind of skills or even experience that is beneficial to God, you just have to dig down and find it.

For example in my day job I work in IT, through this experience I have learned a lot so with that experience I could volunteer to fix computers for my church, or help them setup a network or domain. I’m confident that everyone can come up with something. Are you a plumber or electrician by occupation? Help your church with plumbing or electrical issues. Do you play an instrument? Try out for your church’s worship band. There are so many options, in fact there are usually too many options to choose them all!

Exodus 35:10
10 ‘All who are gifted artisans among you shall come and make all that the Lord has commanded

This was Moses speaking to the children of Israel. He told them that the Lord had commanded whoever was of a willing heart to bring offerings of gold, silver, bronze, thread, jewels, goat’s hair and other items for the Tabernacle then he asked that the artisans or skilled craftsmen use these offerings to craft each part of the tabernacle.

It goes on to list in detail everything that needed done such as the tabernacle and it’s tent, the door, etc.

Then eventually when everything is done and the offerings are presented Moses again addresses the children of Israel. Lets skip down to Verse 30.

Exodus 35:30-35
30 And Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship, 32 to design artistic works, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of artistic workmanship.
34 “And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, in him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver—those who do every work and those who design artistic works.

This is exactly how things should work in the church. Think of it as crowdsourcing but with with your abilities instead of money.
If you were to think about it right now, what could you do to further His Kingdom?
