Metal Missionaries: The Documentary
When it comes to metal documentaries there are quite a few, however rarely is Christian metal mentioned and when it is, not in a favorable way. It seems that in the scene of heavy metal, especially in black metal, the secular bands hold to of the belief that only they can play and that only they are good and only they should play metal. They seem to think that only evil has a right to metal. Well first I have to ask why? I mean God created music so really in my opinion they “stole” it to use it for the purpose of evil. With that said why can’t Christians play metal and use it to glorify Christ?
Well FINALLY there is a documentary that does focus on Christian metal and not only that but it calls Christian metal bands missionaries. This is a term I have used for this scene for a long time and they are right. Metal bands can go into areas where pastors can’t and they are doing just what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:22:
“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”
That sums it all up in my mind. Metal Missionaries: The Documentary is a well thought out documentary that focuses on a few bands that span several genres and explains to the viewer how and more importantly why Christians play heavy metal. There are a few secular bands and while some of those have the attitude of ‘if they are good who cares what the lyrics are about’ others just can’t seem to understand why Christians would want to play metal. I learned some things about some of the featured bands that I didn’t know before. For some bands it was just cool to see someone I knew be on a documentary. This documentary is well thought out, well laid out and the editing could not have been better in my opinion. On top of that the narrator was top notch.
This documentary clocks in at 1:15:09 and will leave you begging for more. I very highly recommend getting this documentary as you won’t be disappointed.
