The name of Jesus
Weekly Bible Study #14
This week I wanted to look at the power behind our words, but more specifically the power of the name of Jesus. Also to complement this week’s message I have selected an assortment of songs that use the name of Jesus. Here are some scriptures for you:
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
The name of Jesus does indeed invoke quite an awesome power as in His name people were healed and raised from the dead, and demons were cast out. The name commands authority and there is such a power associated with the name.
Have you ever wondered why so many people use the name of Jesus in conjuction with cursing? Could it be because subconsciously they feel the power behind the name?
Think about it though for a second, if you were to take any commonly used curse word or phrase containing Jesus’ name and swapped Jesus name out with any other name I guarantee you it will lose any and all power or emphasis. Why don’t we hear people in other religions use the name of Allah or Buddha as a curse word? Because they don’t carry the same power, as the Bible makes it clear Jesus is the name above all names.
Naturally I am not saying we should be taking the Lords name in vain but I just want you to think about this because as Uncle Ben would say “with great power comes great responsibility”. Our words all have power, but there is no power greater than the name of Jesus.
